The first TV programme was broadcast in Vietnam in 1970 and it’s fair to say that the content has improved since then. There are currently five channels broadcasting in Hanoi and HCMC, and two channels else-where. News programmes in English, French and Chinese follow the last broadcast (some time after 10pm). Sometimes soccer or other sports come on at strange hours, for example 3.30am. Each province in Vietnam has a local channel, but you won’t find much in English on these.
Satellite TV is now widely available, which is a boon for some foreign visitors . You’re most likely to find it in an ever-increasing number of hotels, as well as café’s and pubs. Hong Kong’s Star TV is one popular station, along with CNN, the Sports Channels, CNBC Asia and MTV. TV5 Asia is a French-language cable station which is usually pumped in where satellite TV is offered.
