Embassies & Consulates in Vietnam
With the exception of those for Laos and Cambodia, Hanoi’s embassies and HCMC’s consulates do very little visa business for nonVietnamese. You may, however, have several good reasons to visit your own country’s embassy.
It’s important to realize what your country’s embassy can and can’t do to help if you get into trouble. Generally speaking, it won’t be much help if the trouble you’re in is remotely your own fault. Remember that you are bound by the laws of the country you are in. Your embassy won’t be sympathetic if you end up in jail after committing crime, even if such country (though they can intervene to make sure that you’re being treated fairly).
In genuine emergencies you might get some assistance, but only if other channels have been exhausted. For example, if you need to get home urgently, a free ticket is exceedingly unlikely – the embassy would expect you to have insurance. If you have all your money and documents stolen, it might assist with getting a new passport, but a loan for onward travel is out of the question.
Some embassies used to keep letters for travelers or have a small reading room with home newspapers, but these days the mailholding service has mostly stopped and the newspapers tend to be out of date.
If you’re staying a long time in Vietnam, you should register your passport at your embassy (this makes it much easier to issue a new one if yours is lost or stolen). Also consider registering with your embassy if you intend on travelling to more remote areas. Your embassy can also help you obtain a ballot for filing incometax returns. Embassies can also advice business people and will sometimes intervene in trade disputes.
However, remember that the people who work at your embassy are busy – please don’t bother them with trivial matters.
